International Youth Day acknowledges the challenges faced by young people around the world, and the need to provide them with “safe spaces” where they can flourish and grow.
These “safe spaces” are vital for development and wellbeing, covering both physical spaces, and the digital environment. In them, young people can safely and healthily engage with their interests, and in leisurely activities such as play – regardless of their background.
Safe access to play and play spaces is important for a young person’s development, and helps facilitate an environment where they can interact with their peers. This is why the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child guarantees the right for children to “…engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child…”.
